Google Digital Newsstand Aims to Muscle In on Apple

Google Inc. and Apple Inc. have stepped up their battle to win over publishers, as the two companies vie to become the dominant distributor of newspapers and magazines for tablet computers and other mobile devices.

Google is trying to drum up publishers’ support for a new Google-operated digital newsstand for users of devices that run its Android software. With the effort, it is chasing Apple, which already sells digital versions of many major magazines and newspapers through its iTunes store.

The e-newsstand would include apps from media companies offering versions of their publications for smartphones or tablets running Android, say people familiar with the matter. Google hopes to launch it in part to provide a more consistent experience for consumers who want to read periodicals on Android devices, and to help publishers collect payment for their apps, these people say.

Media executives who have talked to Google say details of the newsstand venture and its timing remain vague. They add that it’s possible the venture won’t materialize.

Google has discussed its intentions with a range of publishers, including Time Warner Inc.’s Time Inc. unit, Condé Nast and Hearst Corp., according to people familiar with the matter. The three publishers declined to comment on any talks.

Broadway ticke sales start 2011 on a strong note

The New Year on Broadway got off to a strong start with record ticket sales for the 36 productions: $34,997,571 for the week ending January 2. The same week last season reported $28,089,912. Comparing ticket sales of the previous reporting period ending December 26 of $24,993,789, that is more than a $10 million jump in one week.

Key Brand Entertainment Inc. announced today that it has completed the purchase of Broadway.com from previous owner Hollywood Media Corp. The company also owns Broadway Across America, a producer of many Broadway shows including Promises, Promises, La Cage aux Folles, The Merchant of Venice, Million Dollar Quartet and the upcoming revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying starring Daniel Radcliffe.

“The acquisition of Broadway.com is a very exciting opportunity for us to connect even further with theatergoers on Broadway and around the world,” Key Brand Founder and CEO John Gore, who is also the company’s largest shareholder, said in a statement. “The announcement is especially timely, as a survey by the Broadway League just named Broadway.com the top source for theatergoers looking for information on Broadway.”

Casting Announced for New Kushner Play

Initial casting has been announced for the New York production of Tony Kushner’s new play, “The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism With a Key to the Scriptures,” which will run at the Public Theater from March 22 through June 12, 2011, with opening night set for May 5.

Michael Cristofer, Linda Emond, Michael Esper and Stephen Spinella will reprise their roles from the production at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, where the play premiered in 2009. Joining them will be the actors Bill Camp (“Notes From Underground”) and Steven Pasquale (“reasons to be pretty”), who are replacing Mark Benninghofen and Ron Menzel, respectively. Additional casting is still to be announced.

Broadway continues successful holiday season with $25 million in ticket sales

The holiday season just keeps getting better on Broadway as ticket sales soared to over $25 million last week.

The 37 productions currently running on the Great White Way combined to post a total of $25,632,217 in sales, far surpassing the same week last season at $20,817,705 and exceeding the last reporting period at $23,445,869. The total sales for the season to date is now at $581,189,597, outpacing last season’s total of $569,487,725, highlighting the success of the season so far.

Eight productions finished the week with over a $1 million in sales, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total sales. Those productions were Wicked at the Gershwin, The Lion King at the Minskoff, Elf at the Hirschfeld, Jersey Boys at the August Wilson, Promises, Promises at the Broadway, The Merchant of Venice at the Broadhurst, Billy Elliot at the Imperial and The Addams Family at the Lunt-Fontanne. “The Merchant” is the only play in that lineup.

Of the 25 musicals, 10 plays and two specials, “Jersey Boys” posted the highest percentage of Gross Gross Potential, 106.5 percent.

Taxi TV Screens Gain Ad Business in New York

Take a taxi through the East Village this week, and there is a good chance that a commercial for the Blue Man Group — playing nearby on Astor Place — will pop up on the miniature television facing the back seat.

It would not be a coincidence: the theater troupe is one of the advertisers using the GPS devices in cabs to pinpoint when and where its commercials should play.

Once dismissed as a moving billboard dominated by advertising for strip clubs and beer, the yellow cab (and its backseat screen) is emerging as an unlikely vehicle for marketing techniques more common to the Internet than to a beat-up Crown Victoria.

The number of advertisers — including national brands like AOL, Citibank and Sprint — has doubled since last year, with cabs featuring everything from commercials for Broadway shows to a political advocacy campaign by Human Rights Watch.

The advantages for marketers are clear: captive viewers, affluent consumers and 13,000 locations across New York City — although it may be hard to find one outside Manhattan.

Broadway ticket sales surpass $23 million for another strong showing at the box office

With the holiday season in full swing, the 36 productions on The Great White Way continue to be a strong draw.

Despite falling short of last week’s huge total of $26,365,120, the gross ticket sales on Broadway this past week reached an impressive total of $23,445,869. Looking at this point in the season last year, box office ticket sales were $548,670,020 compared to the current season of $555,557,383.

Seven productions reported ticket sales of over $1 million. Those productions were Wicked at the Gershwin, The Lion King at the Minskoff, Jersey Boys at the August Wilson, Elf at the Hirschfeld, Promises, Promises at the Broadway, The Merchant of Venice at the Broadhurst and Billy Elliot at the Imperial. Attendance was down almost two percentage points from 74.3 percent to 72.6 percent for the week.

The production reporting the largest increase in ticket sales over the previous week was Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark in its second week of previews, up $718,853 to $919,457. Opening night will take place on January 11. Looking at the percentages, The Scottsboro Boys at the Lyceum saw an 18 percent increase in capacity while the Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic saw a nearly a 26 percent drop.
